Clifford (“Cliff�) R. Murray passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday, June 12, after a fight with liver cancer. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris A. Murray, their three children, Douglas (Dianne), Leland (April), and Lynn (Alan), six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was born February 27, 1921, in Palestine, Illinois, and graduated from Palestine High School in 1939, joining the Army Air Corps in early 1942. After serving in both America and Europe during World War II as an airplane technician, he was discharged in 1946. For the next fifty years, he worked as a welding engineer at Stewart Warner, Union Carbide/Linde, and Hillenbrand Industries. He is credited with registering numerous patents on airplane parts, and with designing the hospital bed industry’s first robotic welding system, resulting in a major cost-savings to Hill-Rom.

Marrying Mildred Wampler in 1944, Cliff and she had two children, Douglas and Leland. She passed away in 1952, and he married Doris Ann Dagey, on May 29, 1953. Their daughter Lynn was born two years later. Together, he and Doris raised their children in Beech Grove, Bengal, and Indianapolis, moving several times for Cliff’s work. After the children were grown, Cliff and Doris lived in Watkinsville, Georgia, built a house in Batesville, Indiana, and moved to Jacksonville, Florida, before retiring to the north side of Indianapolis. In Cliff’s spare time, he flew a Cessna light airplane, and played tennis as often as possible, into his 70s.
